Dear Grandparents,
I love music! It’s always soothed my soul, rekindled memories, and helped express sentiments when words could not. It is with music in my heart that I write this welcome letter to all grandparents today.
Two years ago, my family was given an unexpected surprise--beautiful blue eyes, curly red hair, the most kissable lips, and a diagnosis of Down Syndrome--all in a tiny, little, pink package. To say that we were not shocked at this diagnosis would not be true. To say that we felt equipped to provide for this new little angel would not be true. To say that we were not afraid of what the future may hold for us would also not be true. But, one thing was absolutely certain--we made a bond that day to be and do whatever we needed to be and do for our little one, and to give her our pure and unconditional love.
Knowing very little about Down syndrome, I began a journey to educate myself in all areas related to her well-being. As a school teacher, I sought out workshops, programs, and visited schools. I took her to her therapy sessions and to music and play classes. I saw my role in her life as one of support. I wanted to be available for whatever may be needed by her parents or by our little girl. And, in assuming this role, as I was learning how to help her learn and grow, I was unwittingly learning and growing myself. Every day she has amazed me with her abilities, warmed my heart with her hugs, and absolutely enveloped me with her smile.
As a grandparent to four amazing granddaughters, I can say that being a grandmother is the best “gig” I’ve ever had! Each young lady is unique, with her own gifts, her own needs, her own special talents, and her own personality. My newest granddaughter, with her extra chromosome, is no exception. So, to you grandparents of a child with Down syndrome, I wish to say, embrace your little one with love, be there to support the family, and never, ever doubt your little one’s potential - or your own. With life’s music in your heart, you can enjoy your journey as each new day unfolds.
Sincerely, Barbara Edwards
(Kinley’s Grandma)
